8) EVIDENCE
November 11, 2019

So there are no proofs that my metaphysical belief system is true. Well then, what evidence is there?
But first, why do I need evidence? When I was a kid, I had the luxury of being able to spend hours talking to my father as he worked at home, a freelance commercial artist. We talked philosophy and religion.
That’s just who I am.
So naturally when I discovered physics in high school which explained the how, I went into a physics and math major at college. I do have a B.S. in physics, but had to drop the math. I just couldn’t get the proofs, too abstract. And without math, there is no hope of continuing on in physics as I was intending. So I became a computer system designer at IBM—I am really good with logic, algorithms, and creating new things.
During my 5 years at IBM, I got into a serious self-doubt trip and decided that a psychiatrist might help. IBM was nice enough to pay for it, so I went for several weeks to a very smart man. The first session, I was expecting him to say things, but he was silent and I couldn’t think of anything to say, so it was a pretty pointless session. After that during the week I kept notes on what I was thinking, and would expound on those notes with him. After each session during which he would remain silent, he would say “Well then, you blah blah blah”. And I would think, “yes, that’s what I just said, and isn’t everyone like that?” Now I wish I had written all those last words down, but I didn’t think they were important and can’t remember them.
The last session, where he told me that I didn’t need to come back anymore, he summarized what I had just said, and I do remember this one. He said “Well then, you want to know how the world works.” It was at that point that I realized that no, not everyone does care about that. I realized that I was different, not from everyone else, but different from a lot of people.
What do I need then? I need a belief system that is logically consistent. I need a belief system that explains everything. I need a belief system with evidence of its truth. And lastly I need a belief system that helps me in everyday life. I want it all.
It was during those early years that I started exploring the Eastern Religions, in particular the Tao te Ching, got into meditation, psychedelics, and then metaphysical books, and learned astrology and the Tarot. I read everything that gave me new information, not believing everything, but checking everything out. And from all of that over several years, I synthesized my metaphysical belief system. Since then I have continued to refine it.
Before we get to “evidence”, I want to get back into physics. I still read Scientific American every month to keep up with the new developments in science.
One article that intrigued me was in August 2014 entitled “Black Hole at the Beginning of Time”. There was a theory that every particle which fell into a black hole, left its information at the surface, the event-horizon. This is the distance from the black hole where even light can’t travel fast enough to escape, too much gravity. The point is that in our 3-dimensional space universe (excluding time), a black hole creates a universe around it in 2-dimensions, the surface of the black hole event-horizon which extends in every direction around until wrapping itself back to where we started.
Now if, I said “if”, there were entities with consciousness which lived on that surface where there is no 3rd dimension, height, the entities would all be flat circles or squares or whatever. They are called “flatlanders”. And their houses would be made of lines, walls which the flatlanders could not cross, but would have to go around or through a gap called a “door”.
“Cause and effect” would still be the rule of the day, that for an event to happen, the causes of the event could be known. And, unless it was radio waves, an event on one side of a wall must have causes on the same side of the wall. But what if a 3-dimension event should impinge on this universe? Then there could be an effect on both sides of a wall at the same time, which would be impossible, and incomprehensible to flatlanders.
So what would a flatlander call this situation? I think the word is “coincidence”. “It’s just a coincidence.”
Now extend the dimensions by one dimension. Let’s say there is a 4-space-dimension universe and it has gravity which coalesces the matter into a black hole. It follows that its event-horizon would be 3-dimensions. Hmm, this sounds a lot like our universe, even to the current situation where the distance between galaxies is increasing due to the black hole growing and the surface expanding, like a balloon. By the way, don’t try to imagine a 4-dimension space universe, our brains can’t handle it.
Cosmologists have been able to figure out the history of our universe back to the first few seconds after the big bang. From the theorized beginning from a point source, the universe went through a period of rapid expansion and then stopped expanding as fast. The unknown questions still facing the cosmologists are: 1) what was the force that caused the rapid expansion, it isn’t one of the 4 forces we know about today, and 2) what caused the force to stop when it did? The simple answer is that our universe was never a point-source, it was the surface of a 3-dimensional black hole from a 4-dimension universe. Cosmologists have not bought into this theory yet, but I think they will.
So here we are in a 3-dimensional universe which includes height and we accept cause-and-effect. But what if an event from the 4-dimension universe impinged on us? What if there were 2 events which we experience at the same time, but there is no way that a single cause was possible. What do we call that? A “coincidence”.
Now I am not saying that every coincidence is from the 4th dimension, most are just casual random occurrences. What I am talking about are the events that we “notice”, that have that particular quality of making us sit up and pay attention. In order to weed out the random coincidences, I always look for a 3rd coincidence related to the first 2. When I see that, which doesn’t happen often, I accept that I am being delivered a message.
How to interpret the message? An event has a subset of meanings of the universe of all-meanings, a lot of possible meanings, too many to decide on which is the message. But you take a second coincidence and look at its meanings and there are overlaps with the first set of possible meanings, still not focused enough. And then where the third event’s meanings overlap the other two’s meanings, that is usually enough to eliminate all the meanings but one.
So that is my evidence that there is another level of consciousness which I am not aware of directly, but which delivers messages to me sometimes. We will get into more about the interpretations of “signs” later, and the additional question of “where are they coming from?”.
Most of us have significant events in our lives, like meeting our spouse, and can point to the unusual coincidences which made it happen.
My favorite humorous phrase involving this, and I did invent it, is:
“TOO MANY COINCIDENCES TO BE A COINCIDENCE!”
